Background:

Li Yixue, 李宜雪, a 20 year old Chinese woman from Jiangxi province, was forcibly institutionalized after reporting a police officer for sexually assaulting her. She was jailed for approximately 50 days in Jiangxi Mental Hospital, which operates as an extralegal detention facility to imprison otherwise healthy people who speak up against the central communist authority. After deeming her to be mentally stable, that is, completely submissive and unlikely to cause further trouble, the doctors had her released, with a warning to her parents: “if your daughter is ever caught dishonoring the Chinese police, she will be sent back to the mental hospital and she will never be released again.”

Since her release, she made several videos documenting her experience inside the Jiangxi Mental Hospital, and her videos have garnered over 100 million views on Chinese social media before being pulled down and all her social media accounts deleted. As of today, she is re-institutionalized and her fate remains unknown.

English Translation of excerpted testimony of Li Yixue as transcribed in her videos:

Excerpt 1

Let me tell you about how Jiangxi Mental Hospital operates. As soon as you are admitted into the hospital, you receive a round of beatings, and then the medical staffs ask you, “Do you submit?”

If you do not submit, then you get another round of beatings, and then you are asked the same question again. If your answer is still no, then you are being tied to the bed, with your hands stretched above your head, your legs spread-eagled, and they will beat you again, and then you are asked a third time, “Do you submit?”

If your answer is still no at this point, they will give you a shot of tranquilizer, which will cause you to fall asleep. After you wake up, you will be strapped to an electric chair and receive a round of electroconvulsive therapy. One doctor warned me that there is a famous saying inside all the Chinese mental hospitals: “Even if you are a god, as soon as you come into here, you will become a slave. We have a thousand ways to torture you. If you do not submit to me, then you will be in this hell for the rest of your life.”

So the reason you see the patients who were released from Chinese mental hospitals being so docile and obedient, was not because they have been healed of their mental illness. It was only because they were beaten into submission.

There is absolutely no human rights for any patient inside those Chinese mental hospitals. Some medical staffs have been using patients as guinea pigs for all kinds of drug testing. They will forcibly feed you drugs and make observations on the effects they make on your body. I have personally witnessed patients who have been force-fed so many drugs that they ended up having a seizure, writhing on the floor and frosting at the mouths. And there were several women who were force fed certain drugs that made them involuntarily lactate milk, and which later caused them to become infertile.

But what about those patients who refuse to take drugs? The doctors will grind the drugs into powder, mix and dissolve it with water, and put them inside a glass jar that looks like a glass of milk, and then they will stick a long thin rubber tube through your nose that will reach all the way into your stomach, and then they will pour the drug through the tube directly into your stomach.

There are some particularly sadistic nurses who have nothing to do when they are at work, and they will stick this rubber tube into your nose just for fun, and they will stick it back and forth in and out of your nose until you are begging for mercy. Those nurses enjoy seeing the way you beg for mercy and their faces will be beaming with a sick satisfaction.

There are many ways to torture those patients, but what’s the most effective way to torture and also to leave no evidence of it? Of course, that has to be the needle therapy. The nurses will tie your hands and feet to the four corners of your bed, and then they will use a sewing needle that resembles a ball pen, or they will use some discarded and rusted medical suture needles, and they will use those needles to pierce the most sensitive parts of your bodies, such as your nipples, your breasts, your genitals, your buttocks, your inner thighs.

And they will do it repeatedly, penetrating the needles back and forth through your flesh, puncturing the same place as many times as they please, and then when they get bored, they will change to a new patch of skin and they will do it nonstop until they get tired. That feeling will leave you begging for death. But because the needles leave little wounds, afterwards they will be no evidence for it.

Very often in the dead silence of the night, you will hear the most savage cries and the sharpest shrills that pierce from end to end of the patients ward’s hallway, screams that make your pulse stop, and your hair stand still. This is because those nurses who work at night shifts are the most sadistic. There are nurses who will stick needles inside your body all night long. You will be suffering from so much pain that you eventually pass out.

Excerpt 2

When I was inside the Jiangxi Mental Hospital, more than half of the patients in there were just like me. They were sent there by the police, without the consent of their family;not only that, but also no matter what their family members did outside, pleading with the police, begging and bragging the people who work in the government, there was no way for you to get out of the hospital. So in fact, more than half of the patients inside the Jiangxi Mental Hospital are victims of illegal detention. The other half of the patients were tricked into the hospital by their families and their families must sign an agreement with the hospital saying that they are willing to forfeit all legal ramifications, but that is an illegal agreement that they signed, because the family cannot by law have the power of attorney over those patients without a court ruling in the first place.

So let me tell you: the number of people who are illegally detained by the Jiangxi Mental Hospital is so large that you cannot even begin to imagine its scope.

But fundamentally the reason why the Jiangxi Mental Hospital is acting as an illegal detention facility for the police is money. For every person the police sends to the mental hospital, the hospital receives 10,000 yuan (1,300 dollars). If the police sends 100 people, that would be 1 million yuan. If those people stay in the hospital for an entire year that would be 12 million yuan.

Even for those patients who were sent to the hospital by their family members, the doctors crushes them with an iron fist. The doctor would tell the family that “As long as you can trick the person into the gate of the hospital, we have gangsters located inside gate, and we will drag them into the patients ward, and once they are in the patients ward, they will live out their lives worse than cattle and livestock.”

The doctors will tell the patients, “Even your family members don’t treat you as a human, why should we treat as a human? If your family actually treats you as a human being, there would be no way that they would send you to this place.”

Once I heard a patient telling the doctor, “I had an argument with this family member, that was the reason they sent me here.”

Then the doctor told that patient, “Whoever send you here, once you get out, you send that person in here. And we will abuse that person in the exact way we are now abusing you.”

Excerpt 3

A small illness will be treated like a terminal illness. A small flu will be treated like the black death.

The law dictates that when you are prescribing drugs to the patient, you must inform them about its side effects, its likeliness to cause to addiction, but those doctors don’t care. They will prescribe you drugs and increase your dose without limit just so you become addicted so even if you get out of the hospital, you will be crawling back and begging for the prescriptions, so now you will become reliant on the hospital and the hospital will be making money off of you by selling those drugs.

Some people were even dragged back into the patients wards when they were coming back just to buy the medications. My friends, once you have entered this mental hospital, you will forever be mentally ill.

“古有日本731, 现有江西疯人院” (In the past we had Japanese Unit 731. Now we have Jiangxi Mental Hospital.) She quipped.

And that’s not all. There are even more inhumane things happening inside the Jiangxi Mental Hospital. You will forced to take a course called “thoughts rectification”. In that course, the nurse will tell you that you are despised by the entire society, and the reason you are sent here is because the outside world cannot make you into a proper human being and so we are here not to make into a proper human being either, but to treat you as you deserved to be treated, as a subhuman. That is why the nurses enjoy humiliating the patients in this way: they will make you strip naked, crawl on the floor, and bark like a dog. Just to humor the nurses. And when it’s time to eat, they will not let you eat like a proper human being; they will pour the food onto the floor, and make you eat like a dog by picking up food from the floor with your mouth.

And there are patients who are strapped to the bed for days and after repeated torture, they piss and defecated themselves. The nurses will simply leave them there without ever cleaning them up.

And the most fascinating part is when there are female patients. The female nurses never touch them, but they let the male doctors touch them. The male doctors love to stick their fingers inside your vagina to examine you, or expose your breasts in front of everyone and listen to your heart beat with a stethoscope. Only things you cannot imagine, nothing that those animals would not do.

Excerpt 4

None of the female patients inside the Jiangxi Mental Hospital is allowed to wear underwear. Do I understand why? Perhaps when they tie you up on your bed, it’s easier for you to piss and defecate yourself on your bed? Not only that, but for tying up patients, that’s the job of the female nurses, but never. The male doctors love to tie up female patients. And as they are tying you up, they will stick their fingers inside your vagina, pinch your nipples, and as they are doing this, they will tell you, “Do not move! And do not scream. If you scream, we will torture you to death, do you believe me?”

And when female patients take a shower, all the male doctors show up at the shower station, watching us. What? Do those nasty, bald male doctors have no idea what a female look like?

I myself was tied up for seven days and seven nights onto my bed at the Jiangxi Mental Hospital. The male doctor threatened me, “Li Yixue, I will keep you tied up this way until you get out from here, do you believe me?” I replied, “If you dare. Try to keep me tied up for all my life.”

When you are tied up in this way for a very long period of time, you will start to wish for death. I have personally witnessed people who tried to crush their necks by hitting their heads against the wall, by trying to swallow solid objects, and by trying to starve themselves to death. For the first case, they will put you inside a strait jacket so that you cannot make a single move. And once you are in a strait jacket, it will never be taken off of you. For second case, you will be rushed to the ICU, and as soon as your life is no longer in danger, you will be wheeled back into the patients ward. And for the third case, they will force feed food through your nose. Do you know that feeling when you have a long rubber tube stuck into your nose and forced into your stomach? It’s beyond what you can imagine. And not only that, but once you have been given this treatment, for the rest of your stay in that hospital every single day you will be force fed food through your nose. You will no longer be allowed to eat food with your mouth ever again.

And why is it that every single patient who is sent to Jiangxi Mental Hospital is always diagnosed with mental illness? Because if you look sad, you are suffering from depression. If you look angry, you are suffering from mania. Not angry, and not sad? Then you are suffering from dementia. The doctors will always be able to find a mental illness tailor-suited just for you. And there is a perverse logic used by those doctors: “If you do not have mental illness, then why are there so many people in China that are not sent here, but only you are sent here?”

At this point you would want to slap him, and then ask him: “There are so many people I don’t slap, but do you know why I only slap you?”

My videos have now been seen by 10 million people in China. If even I cannot win my case against the Jiangxi Mental Hospital, then there will be no hope for any patients in all China. This is why I have not compromised to this day.

Outlook and similar cases:

It is very unlikly that Li Yixue will ever be able to see the light of the day, unless Communist China suddenly collapses, like the Bashir regime in Syria. Human Rights Watch estimate that there are a few million Chinese who are healthy and mentally stable illegally detained in Chinese mental hospitals for political reasons across all different provinces in China. As we see in the case of Li Yixue, speaking up against the police, accusing the police of sexual assault, can be considered a political crime in China.

There are in fact many other cases similar to that of Li Yixue:

Tang Zhihui 唐志会

Tang Zhihui was born in 1987, Shaanxi province. In 2001, her mother was beaten to death by a neighbor. The offender was sentenced to life in prison, but after bribing the local judge, the sentence was changed to 16 years in prison and the offender family was ordered to pay the Tang family 10,000 yuan (1,300 dollars) in compensation. However, the Tang family only received 2000 yuan (230 dollars). The rest of the compensation was confiscated by the court. The father tried to appeal to the supreme court in the capital and went to Beijing by himself and had since disappeared. Tang Zhihui lived by herself and her three siblings. In order to get the money for school tuition, she went to the court repeatedly demanding the rest of the payment. Instead, she was sent to jail. While under incarceration, she was beaten by the police and one of her eyes was blinded after suffering repeated trauma with a police truncheon. After she got out of jail, she went to protest at the local government and the local authorities sent out thugs to block her protest. The local government in Shaanxi spent a total of 50,000 yuan hiring thugs to keep track of her and her family wherever she went. She was illegally detained inside a mental hospital a total of 5 times. Her little brother was killed in a medical accident. Her two sisters were both drowned for unknown reasons.

Dong Yaoqiong 董瑤瓊

Dong Yaoqiong is the famous Chinese woman who protested against Xi Jinping’s rule by pouring ink at a portrait of Xi Jinping. She has been detained inside a Shanghai mental hospital for two years. Her family is under 24 hour surveillance by secret Chinese police.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Millions of people who meet more unfortunate tragedies are never heard, forever suppressed and crushed by the Chinese censorship apparatus.
