Endless Torture during Cultural Revolution: Famous Opera Actress and Singer Vivisected after Attempting to Commit Suicide.

严凤英 Yan Fengying (April 13, 1930 to April 8, 1968)

Born in Toncheng, Anhui, Yan Fengying was a famous Chinese opera actress and singer. She specialized in Huangmei opera (黄梅戏), a distinct form of opera comparable to Peking opera, but more popular in the central and southern regions of China.

“The birds on the trees are in pairs …”

To Chinese in their twilight ages (70-80+) this Huangmei tune crosses the past and present, south and north, myth and reality, tradition and present, officialdom and market. They hummed to it as Americans once sung to the American Beatles, and the Britney Spears.

“The nymph who fell to earth from above, the queen of Huangmei opera, Yan Fengying gave artistic enjoyment to the Chinese people, which was almost unprecedented and cannot be matched by the modern superstars in the entertainment industry.”

Basically Yan Fengying was the Dilraba of Chinese Hongmei opera in the 1950s

Even though she was the most famous singer and actress in China, her fate cannot be determined by herself. In China if the emperor becomes angry, and in this case, the wife of the emperor, Jiang Qing, “the Madame Mao,” becomes angry, then the most unimaginable horrors can befall any of their subjects in the most gruesome manner.

Under Jiang Qing’s directive, all Chinese opera singers, actresses, and film entertainers, were deemed to be “anti-revolutionary”, “black elements, “ “representative of feudalism, capitalism, revisionism”. Those were real crimes that a Chinese can be charged with during the Cultural Revolution and you can be imprisoned and tortured to death if you were labeled those things.

All—not nearly all, not almost all, but all, all of them, not a single one left behind—all of the opera singers and actresses were imprisoned. All the famous actresses were beaten to death, or committed suicide after being subject to torture, humiliation, and gang rape. A few, perhaps, survived, but the injuries they suffered left them permanently handicapped, psychologically unstable and they lived out the rest of their lives incapacitated and often in abject poverty.

Conscientious Chinese observers remark that the tragic and horrific way in which Yan Fengying died was more than just the personal ups and downs of an opera superstar. The problems lies with the political and social structure in which she lived.

Well, the Chinese observers living in China cannot criticize the government or else they will be sentenced to prison or death and be tortured before being shot in the back of the head, especially so under the current dictatorship of Chairman Xi.

What the Chinese observers really to meant to say is:

China is cannibalistic society in which the absolute ruler can dictate the most cruel and unusual death to any of his subject. A pre-modern civilization in which concepts such as human rights, human dignity, and freedom of expression are not just completely foreign, but fundamentally opposed and severely censored.

The scariest part is that this kind of society is now armed with the most advanced modern technologies such as supersonic missiles, aerial unmanned vehicles, bio-data and genetic data gathering, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, Tiangong Space Station, etc.

The vivisection of Mrs. Yan Fengying

After numerous struggle sessions during which Mrs. Yan was publicly humiliated, beaten and tortured, she decided to end her own life by overdosing on sleeping pills. However, once her tormentors learned that she had attempted suicide, they immediately showed up by her bed. At this time, she was unconscious, but she was not yet pronounced dead.

The leader commanding the interrogation and torture was General Liu Wangquan (刘万泉), who to this day is still alive and lives a comfortable, leisurely life in retirement surrounded by young beautiful female-servants in Nanchang (南昌东湖区) after having had multiple children and grandchildren.

General Liu said: “the directors above me suspect that Yan Fengying is a nationalist spy and she must not be left to die so easily” and then demanded that she be disemboweled to make sure that she was not hiding anything such as camera films or electronic transmitters inside her body.

She was lying in a hospital bed and despite of her family’s plea, the doctors refused to treat her or resuscitate her. The male doctors had completely denuded her and she was plugged with catheters, IV lines, and other tubes all over her body. Her naked body was exposed publicly. A bystander who just wanted to come by to see the naked body of the once famous opera actress, intentionally dropped his lit cigarette on her butt.

Again, at this time, she was not pronounced dead. She was unconscious.

The general ordered the doctor to disembowel her but the doctor refused, saying that it was not his job.

Then the general bawled at him: “What the hell is your problem! I didn’t ask you to treat her. Didn’t I just ask you to find the transmitter in her belly? Do you have any revolutionary issue? Aren’t slicing with a knife and disemboweling a body all the same? Do you want to open it or not?”

Remember that this was during the Cultural Revolution, and doctors themselves can be deemed as anti-revolutionary and so if the doctor did not do as the general demanded, the doctor might get disemboweled himself.

Under General Liu’s threat, the medical doctor fetched a medical axe and pointed it at Mrs. Yan’s throat. Like a butcher to a pig, the doctor pressed down on the axe at her throat and slid it all the down to her chest. With a left flip and then a right flip, the flesh around her breasts were gone revealing her bare sternunm, the long flat breast bone under her chest.

Further down the axe was used to slice open her abdomen and stopped right above the mound above her vaginal opening.

Again, let me remind you, at this time Mrs. Yan was unconscious but not dead.

Seeing Yan’s bloody internal organs, General Liu became very excited and began to utter more obscenities, words such as “Bitch! Whore! Cunt! Fuck your mother!” and then he directed the doctor to rummage through her innards.

The doctor sheepishly obeyed and turned over her insides out. Even her intestines were being pulled out of her abdomen. Her stomach was also sliced open and they did not find anything other than a few hundred sleeping pills. The doctor did notice that her liver, spleen and stomach were all drooping downward quite severely. The doctor’s conclusion was that those were the result of severe traumas induced by external force. “The result of many struggle sessions during which she was punched, kicked, and beaten with wooden bars.”

After nothing was found, General Liu was very dissatisfied and ordered the doctor to “Continue! Dig deeper!” The doctor sighed and used the medical axe to split open Mrs. Yan’s public bone, causing her bladder to rupture and her urine spurted out.

At this point the general actually smiled and said, “Yan Fengying, I have never seen your opera performance, but today I saw your true form!”

The doctor recollects that her heartbeat didn’t fully stop until ten minutes later.
